Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro has sued Verizon for allegedly violating the Consumer Protection Law by not delivering free items it promised new customers.
According to the lawsuit, Verizon offered free Amazon Echo devices and Amazon Prime subscriptions for customers who signed up for a two-year phone contract.
This promotion started in late 2018.
Customers could click a link on their account page on Verizon’s website to redeem their free items, but in some cases the link was missing, according to the lawsuit.
Those who contacted Verizon to report the issue were told the company knew about the problem and worked to fix it, but the problem lasted more than a month, the lawsuit said.
Customers found themselves locked into their contracts, which had early termination fees of up to $350, without the perks they were promised, the lawsuit said.
Verizon continued to offer free Amazon Echo devices to new subscribers despite knowing about the problems, according to the lawsuit.
“If a company chooses to promise incentives to consumers signing up for their services, it is their legal responsibility to deliver on these promises,” Shapiro said in a statement.
It is unknown how many customers were affected by these problems.
