An 18-year-old Erie man has died after rescue crews pulled him from Presque Isle Bay on Wednesday night.

The man, whose name was not released as of Thursday afternoon, was pronounced dead at UPMC Hamot on Wednesday at 9:55 p.m., about 30 minutes after Erie Bureau of Fire divers pulled him from the bay.

The man was recovered after rescue crews were sent to 1 Sassafras Pier near the Bayfront Convention Center to investigate a report of a male in the water.

Others who were with the man saw him enter the water and start struggling, and they attempted to rescue him themselves but were unable to do so, Erie Deputy Fire Chief Fred Gillespie said. The others were able to give rescue crews a good location of where the man might be, he said.

EmergyCare personnel performed CPR on the man before he was taken to UPMC Hamot.

The U.S. Coast Guard and the West Lake Fire Department also responded to the incident.

Gillespie said the water temperature at the time was 74 degrees.

It was not immediately known Thursday why the man went into the water.
