HARRISBURG — Recently resigned U.S. Rep Tom Marino now says problems with his remaining kidney prompted him to leave Congress just three weeks after starting his fifth term.
The 66-year-old Marino abruptly announced his resignation last month, saying he was taking a job outside government. But Marino told The Daily Item of Sunbury last week that he decided to leave after another kidney problem required surgery.
Multiple bouts of kidney cancer have left Marino with just part of one kidney.
Voters in the heavily Republican northcentral Pennsylvania seat will pick a new representative on May 21, the day of the state’s municipal primary election.
Several candidates have announced they’re running to replace him, including Iraq War veteran Stacy Garrity, a Republican, on Tuesday. Political party committee members or delegates will pick nominees.
