Google launches new 'Find Food Support' interactive site
One in nine people in Pennsylvania face hunger, according to the Feeding America Network, which claims to be the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization.
With that in mind, Google has created a new site called “Find Food Support.”
The site launched Monday.
The idea behind it is to make it easier for people to find food pantries and school lunch programs in their community by helping them find food support in one place.
The site has an interactive Google Maps locator tool that can be used to find the nearest food bank, food pantry or school lunch program pickup site.
“We have a lot of work left to do to eliminate covid-related hunger, but that’s why we’re so excited to contribute to this initiative and connect families in need anytime and anywhere to the local programs that can get them help,” said Jack Griffin, founder and CEO of FoodFinder.
According to Google, there are 1,644 school meal sites and 1,322 food pantries in Pennsylvania.
People in need are advised to always call a food pantry ahead of time to confirm the days and times they will give out food.
“We worked with No Kid Hungry, FoodFinder and the U.S. Department of Agriculture to capture 90,000 places with free food support across 50 states — with more locations to come,” said Emily Na, head of Food for Good, Google.
