One man is dead and another man has been injured after a handgun malfunction Saturday at a shooting range in Lackawanna County.

Robert Hamm, 61, of Berwick handed his handgun to another man to shoot at the State Game Lands Shooting Range in Archbald, WNEP is reporting.

The other man fired Hamm’s gun, and the loading mechanism exploded, reports indicate.

Hamm was hit in the chest by a piece of shrapnel and later died at the hospital, reports indicate.

The other man received injuries to his face but is expected to recover, according to reports.

Officials say reloaded ammunition is believed to have been used in the handgun, WBRE/WYOU is reporting.

The Lackawanna County Coroner ruled Hamm’s death to be accidental, saying he died during surgery from blunt force and penetrating wounds to the chest, according to reports.
