The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs is encouraging motorists to show support for women who served in the armed forces by purchasing an “Honoring Our Women Veterans” license plate during March, which is Women’s History Month.
Of the $36 cost for the special plate, $15 goes to the Pennsylvania Veterans’ Trust Fund, which supports programs and resources that benefit women veterans.
About 60,000 female veterans live in the state, according to Maj. Gen. Mark Schindler, Pennsylvania’s acting adjutant general and acting head of the DMVA.
“Purchasing and displaying one of these plates not only shows your support of women veterans, but also allows you to directly fund programs that benefit women veterans throughout our commonwealth,” he said.
The Veterans’ Trust Fund provides grants to statewide charitable organizations that aid veterans service organizations and county directors of veterans affairs. These grants can be used to help veterans in need of shelter, life necessities or other services.
The special license plate is available for passenger cars and trucks with a gross weight not exceeding 14,000 pounds.
PennDOT also offers an “Honoring Our Veterans” plate that benefits the trust fund and a “Pennsylvania Monuments” plate that supports, through the fund, maintenance and restoration of Pennsylvania monuments at the Gettysburg National Military Park.
Other special fund state plates include: Wild Resource Conservation Fund, supporting management of the state’s flora and fauna; Pennsylvania Zoological Council Fund, benefiting six member zoos, including the Pittsburgh Zoo; Preserve Our Heritage, funding educational programs of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission; Pennsylvania Share the Road, assisting with bicycle and pedestrian safety efforts; Distracted Driving Awareness, advancing public education on the dangers of distracted driving.
