Pennsylvania’s delegates to the Democratic National Convention voted unanimously Monday to support Vice President Kamala Harris as their party’s presidential nominee.

The state’s 159 delegates were committed to President Biden. They voted at a virtual meeting Monday afternoon to redirect their votes to Harris.

Allegheny County Democratic Committee Vice Chair Morgan Overton, a delegate who was on the call Monday afternoon, told TribLive that Democratic Chair Sharif Street, a state senator from Philadelphia, quickly mobilized the delegation to rally behind Harris.

“Within minutes, the motion was unanimously carried to support Vice President Harris,” Overton said. “I am so energized to see when Democrats are unapologetic about who we are fighting for on a unified front.”

Biden dropped out of the race Sunday and endorsed Harris in the process. Elected officials from Pennsylvania soon followed suit in supporting Harris, including Gov. Josh Shapiro, who was rumored to be a possible Biden replacement and is now considered a front-runner for Harris’ vice presidential pick.

With Pennsylvania’s 159 delegates, Harris had amassed over 700 pledged delegates for the convention as of Monday afternoon. To win the nomination, a candidate must secure 1,986 delegates.

The Democratic National Convention will be held Aug. 19-22 in Chicago.

Overton said she is excited to attend and noted the new energy around the Democratic Party after Biden dropped out and backed Harris.

Weeks of negative media attention and low morale surrounded the party after Biden’s poor debate performance in late June.

Morgan said enthusiasm among state and local party members and delegates has turned around quickly.

“This is a moment that will set the tone for generations to come,” she said.
