The Real ID deadline is coming in a few short months, so Pennsylvanians who haven’t gotten one yet might want to get their plans — and documents — in order.

Here’s what you’ll need to get your Pennsylvania driver’s license updated to meet the new federal security standards.

What is Real ID?

Real ID is an added security measure going into effect through federal law. Anyone boarding a commercial airline flight, or entering a federal building or military installation, will need a Real ID-compliant form of identification.

PennDOT can update your Pennsylvania driver’s license to be Real ID-compliant, provided you follow the steps below.

Is it mandatory to get a Real ID?

No. Other forms of federally issued identification, such as a passport or military ID, can work instead in those situations.

When does Real ID go into effect?

May 7. After that date, your Pennsylvania-issued driver’s license won’t be acceptable identification to get you onto a flight, unless it’s been updated.

What documents do I need for Real ID?

To update your license with PennDOT to meet the Real ID standard, you will need:

  • Proof of identity, such as a birth certificate or valid U.S. passport
  • Proof of a Social Security number, such as a Social Security card, a W-2 or a pay stub with the full number printed on it
  • Two proofs of current physical address, such as a driver’s license or utility bill with your name and address
  • Proof of all legal name changes (if any exist), such as marriage certificates, court orders, and amended birth certificates

How much does a Real ID cost?

Updating your license to a Real ID will require a one-time fee of $30, in addition to the regular PennDOT fees to renew a license.

Where can I go to update my license?

If you have been pre-verified, you can apply online and receive a Real ID within 15 business days. This applies to people whose first Pennsylvania driver’s license, learner’s permit or photo ID card was issued after September of 2003, provided your information remains on file with PennDOT.

Otherwise, individuals can take their proper documentation to a driver’s license center or one of the 15 Real ID centers located in Pennsylvania.

You can check out the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania website for details.
