The Pennsylvania State Police investigated eight fatal crashes over the holiday weekend that killed nine people.

While fatalities for the 2019 Memorial Day Holiday were three times higher than the same period in 2018, the actual number of crashes state police investigated declined from 787 last year to 755 this year. Police said 216 people were injured in those crashes.

Authorities reported that alcohol was a factor in 65 crashes last weekend, including two fatal collisions.

Troopers made 582 arrests for driving under the influence and issued 14,226 speeding citations over the holiday weekend. State police also cited 1,469 people for not wearing seat belts and cited 308 motorists for not securing children in safety seats.

The statistics include only those crashes investigated by state police.
