A man driving a $284,000 sports car rear-ended a box truck on Route 22 early Thursday morning, injuring a passenger who was thrown from the car, state police said.

Route 22 westbound has been closed at Airport Road in Hanover Township, Lehigh County, since the 3:30 a.m. accident, with traffic detouring onto Airport Road. At 8 a.m., state police said the road will remain closed for an “extended period of time.”

The accident happened in the left lane. According to a police report, a 40-year-old man from North Whitehall Township driving a 2018 McLaren 720S struck the rear of the box truck driven by a 56-year-old Landsdowne man.

The 30-year-old female passenger from Allentown, thrown from the car, was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest. Police classified her injuries as “major.” Police did not indicate whether the drivers were injured.

A crash reconstruction team was at the scene.
