A Philadelphia-area couple already expecting one life-changing moment received a second one this week, courtesy of TV talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres.

Doug and Nick Roberts, of Media, are in the midst of an adoption process. They are also huge fans of the actress Kristen Bell. Somehow, DeGeneres heard about their adoption journey and their love of Bell. So she flew them to California in a whirlwind to be on her show – and get a surprise.

On the “Ellen” show broadcast Tuesday, the couple said they have been together four years and married for about 2½ years. Doug Roberts said they were expecting a phone call about the adoption process at any moment. “Fatherhood is imminent,” Nick said.

She surprised them by bringing out Kristen Bell herself – along with her gift of a lifetime supply of baby goods from her company, Hello Bello.

DeGeneres then had them play a game on the show Bell once did – “Taste Buds.” The pair were blindfolded and presented with dishes they had to describe to the other person without using the name of the food.

They stumbled over baby food and spaghetti before Nick was tasked with tasting and describing … a massive check for $20,000.

The couple was astonished by the check, which was courtesy of “Ellen” and Shutterfly.

Doug Roberts wrote on Facebook Tuesday — after the episode aired — that his “brain still can’t process” what happened.
