In celebrating International Snake Day on Thursday, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission posted a photo of a Northern ring-neck snake, which caused readers to post their own photos of timber rattlesnakes and more.

Wishing everyone “Happy World Snake Day,” the Fish and Boat Commission issued multiple posts on the commonwealth’s reptile residents on its Facebook page, including a video of the interesting and harmless garter snake. “The chances are very good that anyone who has spent any time at all outdoors has seen an Eastern garter snake at least once. It is the most widely distributed and familiar snake in North America,” the fish and boat commission posted.

Knowing that some residents are squeamish about the slithery creatures, the commission also linked to a pro-snake article penned by commission Deputy Director Andrew Shiels. “Few other animals evoke such polarized emotions as fear, admiration, intrigue, and ignorance,” he said.

In Pennsylvania, there are 18 nonvenomous and three venomous snakes species.

World Snake Day is, of course, celebrated by many others and well illustrated in istories and posts including:
