Pennsylvania posts 1,151 new coronavirus cases, 6 more deaths
Pennsylvania reported 1,151 new coronavirus cases and six deaths on Tuesday.
The new data brings the total cases to 146,214 and the total number of covid-19 deaths in Pennsylvania to 7,875.
The state Department of Health said that 168,375 tests were administered the last seven days between Sept. 8-14 with 5,200 positive cases. There were 22,085 test results reported to the department through Saturday.
Of the six newly reported deaths by the state, two are from April and four from September.
There were 1,258 coronavirus cases and seven deaths reported on Monday, which accounted for two days of data. This was the first weekend in which the state did not release a Sunday covid update, choosing instead to release both numbers on Monday.
Nearly 1.7 million people in the state have tested negative for the virus; in total 1.84 million have been tested for the virus in the state.
Centre County saw the most cases on Tuesday with 212 cases. Allegheny had 90 cases. Philadelphia added 197 cases, but their numbers are for two days as Monday’s were not included yesterday because of a delay in results.
Pennsylvania Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine on Monday called on college students to follow the coronavirus safety guidelines recommended by their institutions and by health care professionals.
The state has recorded a 19% increase in recent cases in people between the ages of 19 to 24, many of whom are college students, compared to the numbers from that age group in April during the early stages of the pandemic.
“Why the big jump in cases? Colleges and universities are back in session,” Levine said.
According to the state, there are 21,993 resident cases of covid-19 in nursing and personal care homes, and 4,787 cases among employees, for a total of 26,780 at 956 distinct facilities.
Out of the total number of deaths, 5,300 have occurred in residents from nursing or personal care facilities.
About 10,159 of the total cases in the state are among health care workers.
According to the state’s covid-19 tracking website, there are 483 Pennsylvanians currently hospitalized for the virus, with 61 of them on ventilators as of Tuesday.
The Department of Health advises people to wear a mask, wash hands and practice social distancing.
