Being single for Valentine’s Day might not be so bad this year — especially for people in Pennsylvania.
The Commonwealth came in fifth out of all 50 states as the best place to be single in 2020, according to a recent WalletHub.com report.
The report used 29 metrics related to dating-friendliness to determine the best place for not being tied down. WalletHub, a personal-finance website, broke it down into three main sections — Dating Opportunities, Dating Economics, and Romance and Fun.
“Besides your looks, personality, interests and employment status, your location can influence your odds of finding a romantic partner,” writes WalletHub’s Adam McCann. “Everyone has different priorities when searching for love, but certain places simply make dating easier than others.”
The top overall spot went to Florida, followed by California, Texas and New York. Our neighbor to the west, Ohio, came in sixth.

The Keystone state also fared well when it came to Dating Opportunities, which measured share of single adults, gender balance, and online and mobile dating opportunities. There, it placed seventh.
“In states with low cost of living, for instance, your income might stretch a lot further, which means cheaper or more frequent dates,” McCann wrote. “If you’re more financially stable, though, you might appreciate a state with more attractions to find new experiences for both you and your potential other half. But dating is also a numbers game, so a state with a higher proportion of single adults automatically improves your prospects.”
Other metrics ranged from average beer and wine and Starbucks Caffe Latte prices to movie costs and access to bars.
Last place went to our neighbor from the south, West Virginia.
