Pennsylvania reported 1,200 new coronavirus cases Thursday, and deaths now stand at 90, according to state health officials.

The 1,211 new cases confirmed from midnight Tuesday through midnight Wednesday bring the statewide case count to 7,016. That’s about a 21% increase over the day prior. Sixteen more people have died, including three in Philadelphia.

The new state total includes 63 new cases in Allegheny County, which has had 419 total cases and two deaths; and 12 more cases in Westmoreland County, which now has 84 cases countywide.

Washington County reported three new cases for a total of 38. Armstrong and Greene both reported two new cases. Somerset and Indiana counties held at three and six, respectively.

Statewide, 730 people have been hospitalized for some amount of time since the virus was first diagnosed in Pennsylvania – roughly 10% of all cases.

Of those patients, 216 required admission to an intensive care unit, and 130 needed the assistance of a ventilator.

Pennsylvania Health Secretary Rachel Levine said she did not know the average length of time patients spent on a ventilator or the survival rate of those who needed the machine’s assistance breathing, but she touted the importance of them.

“We can look that up and try to analyze it – I don’t know the exact rate,” she said. “Ventilators are very effective for individuals not able to breathe on their own.”
