Pennsylvania reports 13 new coronavirus deaths; total cases climb over 41K
Thirteen more people in Pennsylvania have died from covid-19, bringing the statewide death total to 1,550, state health officials announced Sunday.
The health department reported 1,116 additional positive cases of covid-19 from Saturday to Sunday, bringing the number of positive cases to 41,165.
People in all of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties have tested positive for covid-19.
“As we see the number of new COVID-19 cases continuously change across the state that does not mean we can stop practicing social distancing,” Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine said in a news release. “We must continue to stay home to protect ourselves, our families and our community.”
Levine said: “If you must go out, please make as few trips as possible and wear a mask to protect not only yourself, but others. We need all Pennsylvanians to continue to heed these efforts to protect our vulnerable Pennsylvanians, our health care workers and frontline responders.”
In order to reopen a particular region, the governor’s plan sets a target of fewer than 50 positive cases of the coronavirus per 100,000 residents for 14 days.
Westmoreland County cases climbed by 14 to 374, with 27 deaths cited by the coroner and 19 deaths reported by the state. Allegheny County saw no new deaths, but 13 new cases of the illness, bringing the total number of cases to 1,211.
Elsewhere in Western Pennsylvania, Beaver County has 366 cases and 46 deaths, and Butler County reported 170 cases and six deaths.
Armstrong County has two deaths and 46 cases.
Washington County has two deaths and 101 cases, Fayette County has 79 cases and four deaths, and Indiana County has 63 cases and four deaths.
Greene and Somerset counties both have 25 cases and zero deaths.
More than 157,000 people have tested negative for the virus. Most of the patients who have been hospitalized with the virus are 65 or older. Most of the deaths have occurred in patients who are 65 or older. No children in Pennsylvania have died from the virus.
According to the state, more than 6,800 nursing and personal care home residents, and more than 800 employees, have tested positive for covid-19. Those numbers are attributed to 431 distinct facilities in 40 counties, officials said.
Roughly 61% of the deaths are attributed to nursing homes, state officials said. Out of the total number of deaths, 952 have occurred in residents from nursing or personal care facilities. In Allegheny County, 52 deaths are attributed to nursing homes. All of Westmoreland County’s state-reported deaths, 19, are attributed to nursing homes.
