Pennsylvania health officials reported 19 more covid-19 deaths Sunday, and 1,295 additional positive cases, bringing the statewide death total to 3,707 and positive case total to 56,611.
People in all 67 counties have tested positive for the virus. More than 227,700 people have tested negative.
Starting Friday, two dozen northern counties began the move into the yellow phase of Gov. Tom Wolf’s red/yellow/green reopening plan. Wolf announced 13 more counties — Allegheny, Westmoreland, Butler, Armstrong, Washington and Greene among them — will shift to the yellow zone on May 15.
“As we prepare to move a number of counties from red to yellow, we need all Pennsylvanians to continue to follow the social distancing and mitigation efforts in place,” Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine said in a Sunday statement. “We must continue to protect our most vulnerable Pennsylvanians, which includes our seniors, those with underlying health issues, our health care workers and our first responders.”
Allegheny County reported two additional covid-19 deaths on Sunday, bringing the countywide total to 122. Westmoreland County reported no new deaths.
Elsewhere in Western Pennsylvania, Armstrong County reported 55 cases and four deaths; Beaver County reported 491 cases and 78 deaths; and Butler County had 195 cases and six deaths.
Fayette County had 85 cases and four deaths; Greene County had 27 cases and one death; and Indiana County had 76 cases and five deaths.
Somerset County had 32 cases and one death. Washington County had 124 cases and four deaths.
“I am proud of the work that Pennsylvanians have done so far, but we cannot stop now, we must continue to take the necessary steps to protect ourselves from covid-19,” Levine said.
Nursing or personal care homes continue to account for a majority of the covid-19 related deaths. Out of the total number of deaths, 2,529, or 68%, have occurred in residents from such facilities.
More than 11,600 residents and 1,645 employees of such facilities have tested positive for covid-19, for a total of 13,290. Those numbers represent 539 distinct facilities in 44 counties.
Approximately 3,759 of the total cases are in healthcare workers.
