Pennsylvania reports 2nd-highest daily covid case count

Pennsylvania on Thursday reported 11,972 additional cases of coronavirus, the second-highest single-day increase. The previous record was 12,884 cases reported on Dec. 5.

The state’s seven-day new case average hit its highest level at 10,065, joined by the seven-day total of 70,452 new cases.

Of Thursday’s additional cases, 11,066 are confirmed while 906 are recorded as probable cases.

The state has recorded 457,289 cases of covid-19 since the pandemic arrived in March, with 422,039 of those confirmed and 35,250 listed as probable.

Health officials define a probable case as one in which a patient has a positive viral antigen test or covid symptoms with a “high-risk exposure” to someone who has been confirmed to have coronavirus.

The state reported 248 additional covid-related deaths, bringing the total to 12,010. This is the highest number of deaths reported in a single day since May.

The rate of testing in Pennsylvania hit a new peak with 32,885 new PCR tests reported in a day. There have been 2,993,507 people who tested negative since March.

The state has 5,852 people hospitalized with covid-19 and 1,191 of those are in intensive care units, according to the Department of Health. There are 675 covid patients on ventilators. Most of the patients hospitalized are ages 65 or older, and most of the deaths in the state have occurred in patients 65 or older.

There are 5,478 ventilators across the state, and 1,900 of those are currently in use.

In nursing and personal care homes, there are 41,735 resident cases of covid-19, and 7,742 cases among staff, for a total of 49,477 at 1,373 facilities. Of the state’s total deaths, 7,249 have occurred in residents from nursing or personal care homes.
