Pennsylvania reports 401 coronavirus deaths, 5,984 cases

Pennsylvania added 401 coronavirus deaths to its total Wednesday, which rose to 19,868, according to the state’s health department.

The state also added 5,984 covid cases to raise the total to 783,170 since the pandemic began in March.

It’s the third-highest single-day report of deaths, with only 554 on May 5 and 479 on April 29 higher. However, the deaths added Wednesday range from Dec. 1 to Jan. 19, with 371 in January and 30 in December. The state has reported 3,890 deaths through its daily updates in January, with only 2,168 actually occurring this month.

Of those deaths, Allegheny County had the most newly reported with 32. Fayette had 15, followed by Westmoreland (12), Butler (seven), Washington (six), Somerset (four), Beaver (two) and Armstrong and Indiana with one apiece. Somerset has the highest death rate per 100,000 residents in the region at 204.2.

Philadelphia had the most newly reported cases in the state with 839, followed by Allegheny (463), Montgomery (282), Lancaster (277) and Bucks (270). Here’s how the rest of the region fared, with the change from Tuesday:

Pennsylvania currently has 4,882 covid patients hospitalized, a rise of 289 from Tuesday. The state has 6,049 ventilators, with 1,884 in use, including 546 by covid-19 patients. There are currently 889 coronavirus patients in intensive care units around the state, with 16.7% of the state’s ICU beds available.
