Pennsylvania reports highest new covid case total in 2 weeks

Pennsylvania reported its highest total of new cases of coronavirus in two weeks on Wednesday.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health reported 9,474 new positive cases of covid-19, raising the statewide total to 683,389.

The state also added the most new deaths to its total since May. Wednesday’s addition of 368 is the most since 554 were added on May 5. However, of the 368 newly reported deaths, 97 are from January, 269 are from December, one is from October and one is from May.

The state reported 29 deaths occurred in Allegheny County, followed by 16 in Westmoreland, 11 in Fayette, eight in Butler, six in Washington, five in Somerset, four in Beaver, two in Indiana and one in Armstrong.

Allegheny County had the most new cases (881) in the state, followed by Philadelphia (752), Lancaster (459), Montgomery (448) and Bucks (414).

Butler County became the 17th county to hit the 10,000 mark with 215 new cases, while Westmoreland (331) and Fayette (302) also had high caseloads. Indiana County’s 111 new cases are the highest it has recorded since the pandemic began in March. Here’s how the rest of southwest Pennsylvania fared, with changes from Tuesday:

According to the state’s covid-19 dashboard, there are currently 5,613 coronavirus patients hospitalized in the state, a decline of 71 from Tuesday’s 5,684. The state has 5,946 ventilators, with 1,918 in use, including 673 by covid-19 patients. There are currently 1,120 coronavirus patients in intensive care units around the state, with 12% of the state’s ICU beds available.

There have been 55,480 resident covid-19 cases and 10,186 cases among employees for a total of 65,666 in nursing and personal care homes in the state.

To date, 3,326,956 individuals have tested negative.
