Pennsylvania teacher salaries rank 10th in the nation

Pennsylvania teachers average the 10th-highest salaries in the nation, according to a National Education Association annual pay analysis.

While Pennsylvania teachers ranked below colleagues in New York, New Jersey and Maryland, they were well above teachers in West Virginia (who ranked next to last) and the bordering states of Ohio and Delaware.

Mississippi teachers ranked last in pay, earning an average annual salary of $45,574.

The national average salary for teachers in the 2018-19 school year at $61,730, up 2.1 percent from the previous year, according to the survey printed Wednesday in Education Week.

Other states of note: Delaware ranks 14th, with an average salary of $62,308, Ohio comes in at No. 22 ($57,799), is near the bottom at 49 ($47,681).
