Pennsylvania tops 1,000 coronavirus cases for 9th straight day

Pennsylvania reported 1,276 new coronavirus cases and 27 deaths on Wednesday, marking the ninth straight day with more than a thousand cases.

Those new additions bring respective totals to 175,922 cases and 8,411 deaths since the first cases were reported in March, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

The department of health said 239,891 tests were administered between Oct. 7-13, with 9,403 positive cases.

Allegheny County had the most new cases in Southwestern Pennsylvania with 97 new positive results to bring the county’s total to 13,533. Here’s how the rest of the region fared, with total cases and growth from Tuesday:

  • Armstrong: 528 (+5)
  • Beaver: 2,084 (+13)
  • Butler: 1,319 (+21)
  • Fayette: 886 (+3)
  • Indiana: 896 (+13)
  • Somerset: 279 (+1)
  • Washington: 1,563 (+7)
  • Westmoreland: 3,053 (+60)

With those 60 new cases, Westmoreland became the 16th county in the state to surpass 3,000 cases. Across the state, Philadelphia had the most new cases with 269, followed by Allegheny (97), York (62) and Westmoreland and Bucks with 60 each.

Of the 27 deaths, 23 are from October and four from September. Three of the newly added deaths are attributed to Allegheny County and one to Beaver County.

In October, the state has reported 269 deaths so far, with 128 in October, 119 stemming from September, eight from August, four from July, three from June, three from May and four from April.

There are 24,111 residents and 5,323 employees of nursing and personal care home who have been diagnosed with covid-19. Residents in those homes have accounted for 5,585 of the state’s deaths.

According to the state’s covid-19 dashboard, there are currently 749 coronavirus patients hospitalized in the state. The state has 4,988 ventilators, with 1,122 currently in use, but only 91 by covid-19 patients.
