PHILADELPHIA — Police say a sport utility vehicle rear-ended another vehicle and then struck a pregnant woman sitting on a wall in north Philadelphia, killing her baby and leaving her in extremely critical condition.

Police say the SUV and another vehicle were heading north on Broad Street at high speed just before 5 a.m. Monday when the SUV struck the rear of the other vehicle, which then hit a tree. The SUV then jumped the curb and struck the 27-year-old woman, who was sitting on a low concrete wall.

Police said the woman, who was seven months’ pregnant, was taken to Temple University Hospital, where her baby was delivered and later pronounced dead just before 9:30 a.m. Monday. The woman was listed in extremely critical condition.

Police said the 19-year-old man driving the SUV and the 16-year-old youth driving the other vehicle were unlicensed and were to be arrested on charges of driving under the influence and related counts.
