A State Police trooper has been suspended without pay and charged with official oppression after an off-duty road rage incident, according to news sources across the state.

David Levy, 36, was charged after an incident on Dec. 28 that resulted in him firing a gun and pulling over a family, officials said.

Levy, of Kennett Square, was drinking at a bar in Delaware County Dec. 28 before forcing a family’s van into the grass off the road on Route 1, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Levy fired a bullet from inside his car, investigators said. He then left his car with the gun to yell at the family inside the van, according to the Inquirer.

Levy “screamed at the victims, accusing them of cutting him off in traffic, and identified himself as a state trooper multiple times,” The Chester County District Attorney’s office said according to abc27.

The off-duty trooper then ran away when the family said they were recording him on a dashcam and calling the police, according to the Inquirer.

The family was on their way to see a holiday light show at Longwood Gardens in Chester County, the Inquirer said.

“No one is above the law,” Chester County District Attorney Deb Ryan said in a statement to the Inquirer. “We hold law enforcement to the highest standards, and the defendant betrayed his sworn oath by endangering all those on the road with his reckless conduct.”

Levy became a state trooper in February, 2021. He worked at the Troop K Media Barracks, according to Fox43.

District Judge Marc Lieberman released Levy on $20,000 bail. Levy is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing before District Judge Albert Michael Iacocca Feb. 8.

In all, Levy is charged with official oppression, possession of an instrument of crime with intent, simple assault, and four counts of recklessly endangering another person.
