A northeastern Pennsylvania man is accused of spitting in the face of a fellow shopper inside a Wayne County Walmart after she asked him to follow the store’s mandatory mask policy.

The incident happened Monday when Evan Spangenberg and his girlfriend were shopping in the Texas Township store without face masks, according to Fox 56.

Police told the TV station another shopper asked the pair to follow the rules. Spangenberg’s girlfriend did so, but Spangenberg began arguing with the shopper.

The woman went to guest services and asked them to report the ordeal to police, Fox 56 reported. As she was doing so, Spangenberg is accused of running up to the woman, spitting in her face and running out of the store.

Police said video surveillance helped in determining what happened and who Spangenberg was.

Court records show he is charged with simple assault, harassment and disorderly conduct.

Walmart leaders announced last week that masks would be required in all of its more than 5,000 Walmart and Sam’s Club locations.
