The polls closed at 8 p.m. for primary election day in Western Pennsylvania.

The biggest race in the area was for Pittsburgh mayor with the Democrat and Republican primaries being competitive.

Pittsburgh mayor

O’Connor knocks off incumbent Gainey in Pittsburgh’s Democratic mayoral primary; Moreno gets GOP nod

Corey O’Connor knocked off incumbent Mayor Ed Gainey in Pittsburgh’s Democratic mayoral primary Tuesday night, while former police officer Tony Moreno secured the GOP nomination.

Allegheny County Council

Madonna-Emmerling, Adams claim leads in contested races for Allegheny County Council

A pair of Democrats jumped out to early leads Tuesday night in the only two contested primary races for Allegheny County Council.

Allegheny County Common Pleas

12 candidates secure nominations to run for Allegheny County Common Pleas bench

Twelve candidates will face off in November’s general election for eight open seats on Allegheny County’s Court of Common Pleas.

Bethel Park

Challenger defeats Bethel Park Council incumbent, school board member scores both parties’ nominations

An incumbent member of Bethel Park Council lost his seat in Ward 1, according to unofficial Allegheny County primary election results.

Bridgeville

Bridgeville area primary roundup: Montani, Trainor top vote-getters in Chartiers Valley; Bigham wins in Carnegie

Monroeville

Monroeville councilman gets primary nod for mayor’s seat

Incumbent Monroeville Councilman Dennis Biondo may have lost the primary for his council seat, but he’s trading it for a run at the mayor’s office.

All candidates make it through Gateway school board primary

All of the candidates for Gateway school board will appear on at least ballot in the general election.

Penn Hills

Refosco, Cartwright secure Democratic spots on ballot for Penn Hills Council

Two members have been selected from three Democrat candidates to run for Penn Hills Council in November. According to unofficial election results from the Allegheny County Office of Elections, newcomers Kimberly “Kim” Refosco, 45, and Ian Cartwright, 47, will be in the competition for two four-year term seats.

Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh voters approve series of ballot referendums

Pittsburgh voters on Tuesday supported a series of ballot referendums that will determine whether the city can discriminate in its business dealings, prohibit the use of the Home Rule Charter amendment process to add rules that conflict with federal or state laws, and bar the city from selling or leasing its water and sewer systems to private entities.

Shaler

Shaler Area School District to see contested races for 3 school board seats

Shaler Area School District voters will see contested November elections in two of the district’s three regions, with at least three new members likely to join the nine-member board, according to unofficial Allegheny County election results.

Verona

2 newcomers, 2 incumbents earn spots on November ballot for Verona Council

Four members have been selected from seven Democratic candidates to run for Verona Council in November.

Allegheny Valley

Allegheny Valley School Board primary election advances 5 candidates

Tuesday’s primary races for Allegheny Valley School Board pushed forward five candidates, including the sole incumbent, to November’s general election, where four seats will be up for grabs.

Highlands

Highlands voters will choose between 3 for 2 available seats in Region 2; other races decided

Nominees for Highlands School Board were solidified Tuesday, with two incumbents and three newcomers on the November ballot. There are four seats up for election.

Leechburg

Leechburg Area School Board results: Lovelace, Stewart, Brady and Reinke win both party noms

It appears that two incumbents will be joined by two former school directors on Leechburg Area School Board in December.

Lower Burrell

Stoltz, Logan win Lower Burrell Council primary

David Stoltz and Carley Logan appeared to be the top two vote-getters in a three-person race for the Republican nomination for seats on Lower Burrell Council.

New Kensington

Toney, DiCarolis win New Kensington Democratic council primary

Unofficial results from a three-person race for two Democratic Party nominations on New Kensington Council showed Phillip Toney and Nicholas DiCarolis coming out on top.


WESTMORELAND COUNTY

Coroner

Ackerman upsets Carson to win GOP primary for Westmoreland coroner

Former Westmoreland County Deputy Coroner John Ackerman was poised to upset first-term incumbent Coroner Tim Carson in Tuesday’s Republican primary.

Register of Wills

Pecarchik wins over GOP incumbent in Westmoreland register of wills primary

Westmoreland County Republicans Tuesday nominated former acting register of wills Katie Pecarchik to serve an abbreviated two-year term to head the office, apparently ending the short tenure of her replacement.

Hempfield

Hempfield incumbent leads GOP field for 2 supervisor nominations

One Republican incumbent and one new candidate were the leaders among five GOP candidates seeking nominations for two seats on Hempfield’s board of supervisors, according to unofficial results from Tuesday’s primary.

Latrobe

Rossi leads GOP field, Kozar tops Democratic ballot in Greater Latrobe School Board race

Yelayna Rossi led the balloting for four Greater Latrobe School Board seats, with 18 of 20 precincts reporting in Tuesday’s Republican primary.

Murrysville

All Franklin Regional school board candidates make it through primary

All of the candidates for Franklin Regional school board made it through Tuesday’s primary and will appear on at least one side of the ballot in the general election.
