President Joe Biden is expected to name Baldwin native Susan Orsega as the nation’s acting surgeon general, according to a report from the Washington Post.

Rear Adm. Orsega will hold down the position until Biden’s nominee, Dr. Vivek Murthy, can be confirmed by the Senate. Murthy served in the role under former President Barack Obama.

Orsega, a 1986 graduate of Baldwin High School, is a career commissioned officer in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and a longtime infectious-disease specialist. Her position was listed Tuesday evening on the Health and Human Services website.

Jerome Adams, who served as surgeon general in the Trump administration during the coronavirus pandemic, resigned at the request of the Biden administration.
