Historic renovations at the White House: From 1792 to Trump's latest project
Anyone scrolling on social media over the past few days might’ve come across photos of the East Wing of the White House being partially demolished.
Construction on President Donald Trump’s new White House State Ballroom is underway.
It will cost approximately $200 million, and the White House said Trump and other donors committed to providing the funds necessary.
The addition will be approximately 90,000 total square feet — with a seating capacity of 650 people, according to the initial announcement. It’s significantly larger compared to the 200-person capacity of the East Room at the White House.
“The White House is one of the most beautiful and historic buildings in the world, yet the White House is currently unable to host major functions honoring world leaders and other countries without having to install a large and unsightly tent approximately 100 yards away from the main building entrance,” Trump’s administration said.
However, the new ballroom will still be “substantially separated” from the White House’s main building, the announcement said, but with the same theme and architecture.
This is not the first time a sitting president has made adjustments to the iconic White House. Here’s a list of the major renovations the White House has had over the years, according to its historical association:
- 1792 — Construction on the White House began
- 1817 — The White House completed its rebuild after the British burned it on Aug. 24, 1814
- 1902 — Former President Theodore Roosevelt modernized the White House for the 20th century and established the West Wing as the new executive office space for the president and their staff (the East Wing was constructed this year as well)
- 1927 — Former President Calvin Coolidge’s administration made a significant renovation
- 1942 — A second story was added to the East Wing during former President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s term to conceal an underground emergency bunker
- 1952 — Former President Harry S. Truman’s renovation was completed, which completely gutted and rebuilt the White House from the inside (this renovation began in 1948)
After Truman’s renovation, every president and first lady has made changes inside the White House in their own ways, the historical association said.
Some smaller but notable renovations include:
- The Blue Room underwent renovations by Jacqueline Kennedy, Thelma “Pat” Nixon and Hillary Clinton
- Claudia “Lady Bird” Johnson oversaw the redesign of the East Garden and the creation of the Children’s Garden
- Gerald R. Ford had an outdoor swimming pool built
- Michelle Obama created the White House Kitchen Garden on the South Lawn
- Former President Barack Obama redesigned the Oval Office in 2010, Today reported, and also upgraded the tennis court to function as a full-size basketball court
During Trump’s first term, he also overhauled the Oval Office. The $3.4 million renovation included updating the 27-year-old H.V.A.C. system and the building’s IT systems, repairing the South Portico steps, fixing leaks and working on the lower lobby of the West Wing, Architectural Digest reported.
