A majority of respondents in a recent poll say they disapprove of the way President Trump is handling Iran amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran and feel less safe because of it.

The poll, conducted by ABC News/Ipsos shows that 56 percent of respondents said they disapproved of Trump’s handling of Iran policy, while 52 percent said that the president’s decision to carry out a military airstrike to kill Iran’s military commander Qassem Soleimani has made the United States less safe overall.

“This suggests that despite Iran appearing to deescalate after a rocket strike on U.S. bases in Iraq caused no fatalities, this has not been a ‘win’ for the President, nor has the American public’s view on the crisis softened,” Ipsos said in a statement.

An overwhelming 94 percent of Democrats and more than half of Republicans – 52 percent – are either “very” or “somewhat” concerned about a new war. But almost nine in ten Republicans – 87 percent – back Trump on Iran, the poll showed.

The poll, conducted on Friday and Saturday, spoke to 525 adults and has a margin of error of 4.8 percentage points.
