Cal U honored for voter engagement with Gen Z
California University of Pennsylvania’s effort to engage Gen Z students in the electoral process is getting rave reviews.
The Fair Election Center’s Campus Vote Project recently named Cal U among the top 10 voter-friendly universities in Pennsylvania. This marks the second time the school has won the designation, first for its efforts in the 2016 election and now for its efforts last year.
Melanie Blumberg, a political science professor at school’s Washington County campus on the banks of the Monongahela River, said the school’s recent voter engagement campaigns fell under the auspices of the school’s American Democracy Project. The project, a civic engagement effort, dates to 2003.
Cal U ran voter registration drives beginning at orientation last fall and continued up through the last day to register for the fall 2018 election.
“We went all out for this election because we wanted to make the point that it isn’t just the presidential elections that are important,” Blumberg said.
