Studies suggest people with covid antibodies may only need 1 dose of vaccine
Two new studies suggest that people who have had coronavirus should still get vaccinated, but these studies also argue that one dose of a covid-19 vaccine may be enough to “supercharge” antibodies, The New York Times reported.
These two studies join other recent findings that also suggest that people who have had covid-19 may only need one dosage of a covid-19 vaccination.
Dr. Jennifer Gommerman is an immunologist at the University of Toronto. Though Der. Gommerman isn’t involved in any of the new studies, the immunologist told the NY Times: “I think it’s a really strong rationale for why people who were previously infected with Covid should be getting the vaccine.”
When infected with a virus like coronavirus, most people produce antibodies that may last months. However as the report stated, some people who didn’t experience any symptoms or whose symptoms were light, may produce less antibodies that may become “undetectable” more swiftly.
One of the newest, unpublished studies focused on people who have covid-19 antibodies. The study suggested these people would have trouble with B.1.351 a.k.a. the South African variant of covid-19. However the study also found that with just one shot of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine their antibodies were supercharged.
For people who haven’t had covid-19, but who received two does of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine, their antibodies weren’t reportedly as strong as people who already had antibodies and who took just one shot of either vaccine, this same study suggests.
Though in another study led by Dr. Florian Kramer who works at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York as an immunologists, people who had antibodies who also got vaccinated experienced more side effects. According to the study this indicates that these people are producing even more antibodies then those who hadn’t had covid-19, but who’ve been vaccinated.
According to Dr. Kramer, “If you put all four papers together, that’s providing pretty good information about people who already had an infection only needing one vaccination.”
Those are just two of the recent studies done on covid-19 vaccines and their immunity. The Associated Press recently reported the FDA confirming Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine would offer a great deal of protection against covid-19 with one single dose of it. The FDA stated that the vaccine is 66% effective and protective against mild to severe cases of covid-19. Though the vaccine is currently 85% effective against the most severe form of covid-19.
While studies suggests that one shot of a Pfizer or Moderna should be enough to “supercharge” antibodies in people who have had coronavirus, both companies offer two shots of their vaccines currently. Both vaccines are regarded as 95% effective of two doses.
