The news that President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump have tested positive for the coronavirus has become the biggest story of the moment.

The positive tests come just hours after the White House announced that senior aide Hope Hicks also tested positive for the virus after traveling with the president several times this week.

Local officials from across the county and state began reacting to the reports of the president’s condition.

Pittsburgh-based infectious disease experts say President Trump’s age, 74, and other health factors could make him especially vulnerable to covid-19.

“Age is the most important factor in how well people do — or how well people don’t do — with covid-19,” said Dr. Graham Snyder, UPMC’s medical director of infection prevention and hospital epidemiology. “We know that if you’re older, you’re more likely to have complications, including hospitalization and death,” he said Friday.

Vice President Mike Pence and second lady Karen Pence have tested negative for covid-19 Friday morning.

• Presidential candidate and former Vice President Joe Biden and other prominent Democrats wished the president and the first lady well in their battle against the coronavirus.

Biden and his wife, Jill, tested negative for the virus, his primary care doctor confirmed Friday.

• The president had a rather busy week. Here’s what he was doing in the days before he tested positive for covid-19?

• Trump joins a list of presidents that have fallen ill while in office.

• Trump’s positive test result has created questions about how the presidential campaign may change from here until Election Day.
