One person was killed and another seriously wounded in a shooting Thursday afternoon at a popular tourist spot in the Outer Banks.

According to news reports, the incident happened around 2:37 p.m. at the Avalon Fishing Pier in Kill Devil Hills.

The Kill Devil Hills Police Department said a suspect is in custody.

Police declined to identify the person killed or the one injured, pending family notification.

According to The Virginian Pilot, residents and vacationers reported via social media that they heard several shots, with several people rushing to provide aid.

At a news conference, Kill Devil Hills Assistant Chief Dana Harris said they located a suspect and arrested him in Southern Shores, around 8 miles from the incident location. He said a weapon was recovered from the suspect’s vehicle, but did not identify the suspect.

“I don’t ever remember anything like this,” Harris said.

The Avalon Pier, which houses games and a bar, was closed until further notice.

Kill Devil Hills police are investigating, along with the North Carolina Bureau of Investigation and Dare County Sheriff’s Office.
