Several 1-year-old children apparently escaped a Louisiana day care and were found wandering near a highway, prompting state officials to yank the facility’s license.

According to the New York Daily News, four 1-year-old children at the Color Wheel Learning Center in Ascension Parish “found their way out of the facility’s play yard” on March 19.

A passerby reportedly spotted the children outside of the fence, near Highway 44. The person returned the children to staffers at the facility, who were unable to give an explanation as to how the toddlers managed to escape, according to a statement from the Louisiana Department of Education.

The Daily News reported that officials from the state department revoked the license on Friday, saying the incident was just the latest instance of negligence.

Citing an October incident where authorities said another 1-year-old opened the gate to the play yard and wandered to the facility’s parking lot, the Department of Education conducted an investigation due to the day care’s “lack of supervision,” the paper reported.

In that instance, a staff member who happened to be outside corralled the child and took them back inside.

The Color Wheel Learning Center has 15 days to appeal the department’s decision to revoke its license, according to the Daily News.

Day care providers that have revoked licenses are ineligible to reapply for two years.
