Dinosaur found at Denver construction site could be rare torosaurus
A construction crew made a groundbreaking discovery when they found dinosaur fossils in Denver.
A limb bone and several ribs were revealed during excavation near a retirement community in the Highlands Ranch neighborhood, reports Fox-31 Denver.
“From what we’ve seen, we think it’s a horned dinosaur, something like triceratops,” chief fossil preparator Natalie Toth from the Denver Museum of Nature and Science told Fox-31.
Toth told the TV station that it could also be a rare torosaurus. Just three bones distinguish a triceratops from a torosaurus.
The fossil layer is estimated to be 65 million to 68 million years old, reports The Denver Post.
“Finds like this, while relatively rare, are a great reminder of how dynamic our planet is and how much more there is out there to discover,” Dr. Tyler Lyson, curator of vertebrate paleontology at DMNS, told The Denver Post.
Construction continues while paleontologists explore the site and study the fossils.
