A Louisiana man was arrested after shooting two men attempting to kidnap his son, killing one.

Hakim Dumas of Slidell was reportedly at home in the early morning hours of Oct. 24 when two men attempted to take his sleeping child.

Dumas pulled a gun and shot at both men, according to New Orleans CBS affiliate WWL-TV.

The surviving man, Billy Porche, 24, was apprehended and charged with aggravated attempted kidnapping and second-degree murder. The murder charge was enacted with Porche’s alleged actions directly causing the death of the other assailant.

Dumas was also arrested. He is facing felony charges since he is a convicted felon who is not allowed to possess a firearm.

He was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated number or mark.

Authorities did not charge him with the homicide, because he acted in self-defense, the station cited authorities as saying.

Some gun rights groups are arguing that felons should be able to own guns within their own homes.

Lone Star Gun Rights says the prohibiting anyone from having guns in their home violates their rights.

“While it sounds good on paper, the problem is that all of these laws are infringements on our natural right to bear arms,” the group said in a statement.

If convicted, Dumas faces a one-to-five year sentence for the doctored serial number charge and a five-to-20 year sentence for the gun possession charge.
