IRS adds details to online stimulus money tool

For nearly two weeks now, taxpayers have been able to use a tool on the IRS website to find out the status of their coronavirus stimulus money.

Now, the Get My Payment tool has been expanded to include more information about your payment from the government’s $2.2 trillion economic relief plan.

The new features include the date your check will be mailed out and why your payment has not yet been processed.

According to the IRS, a user will see one of three statuses for their payment:

• Payment Status: Means a payment is coming and will show either a date you can expect your money and whether it will arrive via mail or direct deposit, or that you are eligible but that a payment date has not been set.

• Need More Information: Means you are eligible for a payment but the IRS needs more information from you. It should tell you what details they need.

• Payment Status Not Available: Means the IRS cannot determine your eligibility for a payment.

To use the tool, users enter their Social Security number or Individual Tax ID Number, along with their birth date, street address and ZIP code.

For individuals with an adjusted gross income of $75,000 or less, it means $1,200. For married couples earning $150,000 or less, it means $2,400; for each qualifying child, it’s $500 more. For people earning more than those numbers, the payment drops until it hits $99,000 for individuals or $198,000 for married couples.

The House Ways and Means Committee says it could take up to 20 weeks to get all the payments made. The checks will be issued in reverse adjusted gross income order, meaning the lowest-income filers get paid first.
