An American alligator lurks with its eyes and nose just breaking the surface of the black water of the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge.

An elderly woman who slipped and fell into a pond Friday was attacked and killed by two large alligators, according to multiple reports.

The incident occurred in Florida, and the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office said that after the woman fell into the water she “struggled to stay afloat.” That is when the two large alligators reportedly grabbed her and pulled her beneath the surface, killing her.

The incident reportedly happened around 8 p.m. at the Boca Royale Golf and Country Club in Englewood Florida.

An alligator trapper with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission was called in and reportedly caught the two alligators. One of was reportedly 8-feet, 10-inches long and the other was nearly 8-feet long.

The country club is reportedly situated within a 1,000-acre gated community, and the Huffington Post said that the general manager there said that warning signs about the alligators were posted.

Florida is known for its large alligator population. Despite that, attacks are rare, but the latest was at least the third in the United States since May. The body of a man who had been retrieving Frisbees from a lake in Largo, Fla., was found on May 31. And in June, a man was killed after being dragged into a retention pond by an alligator in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
