Man wearing Nazi uniform accused of assaulting Georgia student in viral incident
A man accused of striking a University of Georgia student while wearing a Nazi uniform outside a bar now faces an assault charge, according to information from police and school officials.
Athens-Clarke County Sheriff’s Office records show local police arrested Kenneth Leland Morgan, 33, on Friday. He was booked into the local jail just before 3 a.m. that day.
Lt. Katie Jenkins, a public information officer for the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, told USA Today that Morgan faces charges of misdemeanor simple battery and felony aggravated assault.
Videos of the man wearing a Nazi uniform circulated widely on social media over the weekend.
UGA: Man in Nazi uniform was not a student
The University of Georgia said the suspect is not a student or affiliated with the school.
“We are horrified by the actions of an individual who, while in downtown Athens wearing a Nazi uniform, assaulted a female University of Georgia student,” the university said in its statement.
“His actions, which were caught on videotape, are appalling, and we are grateful to Athens-Clarke County police officers for swiftly apprehending and arresting him,” the statement continues. “We encourage any other students affected by this disturbing act to reach out to Student Care and Outreach for support.”
The incident took place outside Cutter’s Pub, according to The Red & Black, a student newspaper at the university.
When reached by USA Today, Cutter’s Pub confirmed that the incident “did not occur in Cutter’s Pub, but rather on the sidewalk in front of the bar.”
The business did not provide additional information.
Friend confronted suspect
Grace Lang, identified in media reports as the 23-year-old student who was hit, was at the bar when one of her friends approached the man, she said in interviews with NBC News and The Red & Black.
“She was mainly just telling him he needed to leave and needed to go home,” Lang told NBC.
Video of the attack circulating online shows the suspect outside a bar, with a woman yelling at him to leave. The woman pushes the man, who then says, “Don’t touch me.”
She responds, “You can’t wear that …” as a large crowd begins to gather, and at one point, the man appears to strike a woman in the head, the footage shows.
‘Heinous antisemitic behavior’
Counselors are available through the school for students who witnessed the incident, according to UGA Senior Director for Integrated Media Communications James Hataway.
The university’s statement went on to call the suspect’s actions “heinous antisemitic behavior.” University officials were in contact with the student who was hit, as well as other students who witnessed the attack.
Man wearing Nazi uniform remained jailed Monday
As of late, Monday morning, Oct. 27, online sheriff’s office records show Morgan remained jailed on $1,500 bond.
An attorney of record was not listed online for Morgan.
