MIDDLETON, N.H. — Police in New Hampshire say a 3-month-old puppy was stabbed during a break-in at a home.

WMUR-TV reports police said no one was home during the burglary on Thursday in Middleton. When the residents came home, they found the puppy, named Jax, with stab wounds to his chest and abdomen.

Police said Jax was taken to an emergency veterinarian in Portsmouth, where he underwent surgery Friday and was recovering.

“He came in last night for puncture wounds,” Andrea Dube, a supervisor at the Port City Veterinary Referral Hospital, said Friday. “He’s in good spirits, taking it day by day, is in very stable condition and getting lots of love.”

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family with veterinarian bills.

Police are still investigating.
