Shootings at South Carolina State University leave 1 dead, another injured
A pair of shootings on the campus of South Carolina State University left one person dead and another wounded as the institution was hosting homecoming celebrations over the weekend, according to state officials.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) said both shootings occurred on Saturday evening, triggering a campus-wide lockdown.
A woman was fatally shot in the first incident, the state agency said. In the second shooting, a man was injured and remains in the hospital.
“The shootings are not believed to be connected at this time, however, SLED’s investigations are active and ongoing,” the agency said in a statement.
U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., said on X that she was “heartbroken by the tragic events which occurred at South Carolina State University last night.”
She added, “Please join us in praying for the victims, their families, and the entire Bulldog community as they grieve this tragedy.”
South Carolina State University is the state’s only public historically Black university. More than 2,700 students were enrolled at the school last year, according to a fact sheet on the university’s website.
