The Social Security Administration is making a major upgrade to its online services.

People who access their benefits via their My Social Security account will now have one less thing to carry around with them, as the administration is rolling out a new, digital Social Security Number (SSN) feature.

In a press release late last week, the administration revealed that users will now be able to access their Social Security cards digitally instead of carrying around a card.

The administration hopes that through this digital access, people will be less likely to misplace their cards and reduce the number of in-person visits to Social Security offices and/or having to wait to receive the card in the mail.

Acting Commissioner Lee Dudek said in the release that the administration hopes this digital approach will help its recipients more effectively.

“We are proud to offer this new digital solution to our account holders,” Dudek said. “This enhancement reflects our commitment to providing better service to the public while ensuring that their personal information remains secure. We believe that this modern approach will meet the needs of our constituents in a more efficient manner.”

This new feature will be available in “early summer,” according to the press release. More information about creating a my Social Security account can be found here.
