Wine flows from water taps in small Italian town

Imagine turning on your kitchen faucet only to have wine flow out instead of water.

At first, it sounds like heaven.

But then, you might consider what effect that would have when you go to take a shower. Or wash clothes.

The residents of Castelvetro, a small village about 10 miles south of Modena in northern Italy, awoke Tuesday morning to find Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro — a sparkling red wine — coming from their taps, the local newspaper, Gazzetta di Modena, reported.

What happened? Was it another wedding miracle?

Nope. It turns out the nearby Cantina Settecani winery had experienced a “technical fault,” the newspaper reported. The winery’s silos are connected to the town’s water pipes, and because the wine is at a higher pressure than the water, a valve issue sent the wine back through the pipes of the aqueduct and into some residents’ homes.

It was quite a sight.

The Gazzetta reported some residents voiced serious health concerns, arguing that if wine could find its way into their water pipes, what else might be on tap?

But the paper reported other quick-thinkers bottled as much as they could before the “problem” was fixed.

The area water board sent out technicians to restore conditions to good old H2O.

The local council posted an update on their Facebook page.

Many on Facebook were concerned, while others had a more lighthearted take.

One user commented, “Opening the faucet seeing Grasparossa come out I think it’s a dream come true. Good morning.”

Another wrote, “Well done … now let’s see what you can do with loaves and fish.”

And yet another: “Party over? Too bad.”
