YMCA closes all 8 branches in Western Pa. in response to covid-19 outbreak
The YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh announced it will close all eight of its branches beginning Monday night.
“This is not a decision we wanted to make. We are a community organization that thrives on bringing people together and creating personal connections that change lives through membership and programs,” the YMCA announced in a prepared statement Monday morning. “But the nature of covid-19 virus, and how it spreads, presents significant challenges.”
The YMCA hopes to reopen its branches March 30.
The closures include the organization’s three overnight camps and three child development centers, in addition to the already-closed 40-plus school sites where the YMCA provides before- and after-school care.
If people need to retrieve items from a YMCA branch, they are asked to do so by 6 p.m.
On Sunday night, Gov. Tom Wolf ordered Allegheny County bars and restaurants to stop dine-in service for 14 days to help stop the spread of the coronavirus.
The Allegheny County Health Department announced Monday morning two additional cases of covid-19, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the county to six.
