The real problem with the Highmark-UPMC negotations is that each of the insurers own hospitals. They are competitive and want to dominate that field at our expense.

Pennsylvania should pass a law stating that companies that want to provide insurance in this state must agree to accept others’ insurance at their facilities. If not, they must divest themselves from their hospital systems in order to be independent entities.

If they don’t want to negotiate, then remove them from being tax-exempt nonprofits. Start taxing them if they can’t resolve their issues. They both own a lot of real estate. Give them an ultimatum: Resolve the issue in a time period set by the state.

Other independent insurers are accepted by both UPMC and Allegheny Health System. You can go to the doctor of your choice with no problems.
