Letter to the editor: Abortion least of evils?

It is apparent to me that letter-writer John Watson believes he is a prophet from God, called upon to deliver his message against abortion (“Wolf’s veto of abortion ban,” Dec. 9, TribLIVE).

He seems to think that God has told us that all lives must be preserved. This is written, supposedly, in texts created thousands of years ago by ignorant men who believed the earth was flat. One needn’t wander far in these texts to see tales advocating genocide, including children.

If indeed there is a God, he is a very cruel one, who sets us on a path toward extinction by giving us such a small home. If we don’t do something to control our population, nature will do it for us — by wars, starvation and disease. Out greatest threat is climate change, which, if unchecked, will kill us all, babies included. There are simply too many people burning too much fossil fuel. As developing countries are trading in their bicycles for cars, the problem is being exacerbated further. Where better to start trimming our numbers than those who are defective and will be a burden on society?

No one thinks abortion is a good thing, but in many cases it’s the least of the evils. God himself takes the lives of many children, born and unborn, often in very cruel ways.

It’s ironic that many who object to abortion also object to birth control, the best (realistic) way to prevent abortions. Many abortion detractors are inspired by religious ideology, which is an inappropriate imposition on the public domain.
