Your article on Robert Morss (“Feds: Glenshaw man charged in Jan. 6 riot had Lego model of Capitol, militia notes,” July 8, TribLIVE) feels like it should have come from CNN, Vox or The Guardian. I’m very surprised to see something like this coming from the Trib.

The first sentence accuses the man of “facing federal charges for helping to lead the Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol;” however, none of the crimes he is being charged with have anything to do with insurrection, treason or sedition. Furthermore, you provide no evidence that he was a “leader” in this movement other than the claim from the government.

Secondly, you list items such as a flag, military gear, military books, Lego models, etc. found by federal investigators. They are evidence of what? Since when are guns found in his home or car a crime? I’m assuming they are all legal since he’s not being charged with any firearm violation.

Thirdly, you parrot the government’s claim that he “came for battle” but didn’t note that he came unarmed? Who comes for battle unarmed when firearms are sitting at home?

Finally, you made no mention that you attempted to contact Morss or his family for a statement or their side of the story.
