When I think of French philosopher Voltaire’s words — “Truly, whoever can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities” — my thoughts are immediately drawn to Donald J. Trump, former president and perpetrator of lies, hate, discord, etc. An instigator who has created instability and uncertainty among U.S. citizens. Look at the vast number of his blind, trusting followers.

Was not the Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol an atrocity brought on by Trump and his “stolen election” absurdities? Where is the mindset of Trump’s followers who demonstrate their allegiance to an individual whose agenda is me, myself and I?
