There are not many times people put their names on a ballot with the kind of experience Westmoreland County coroner candidate John Ackerman has: 25 years as a police officer; 50 years as a fire department member; 18 years as a deputy coroner, investigating more than 9,000 deaths; endorsements from the Fraternal Order of Police; letters of recommendation from doctors of forensic medicine and many former Pennsylvania State Police troopers who worked alongside him.

I have known Ackerman all my life. I was mayor in Southwest Greensburg, where we grew up and where he is a police officer. I am a Democrat and always ran as a Democrat. The Republican Party did a great job of taking control of county government; now they have an opportunity/obligation to choose the most qualified Republican, and that clearly is Ackerman. Don’t let this opportunity slip through your fingers.
