PJM, the grid operator that serves 67 million people across 13 states, including all of Pennsylvania, is facing an unprecedented electricity demand surge due to AI data centers opening. Starting as early as summer 2026, the grid may have only enough power to remain reliable, and by June 2027, the region could fall below reliability standards, increasing the risk of rolling blackouts during extreme heat waves or extreme cold weather.
In order to preclude this dire outcome, AI data centers must either provide their own independent sources of electricity or accept being taken off the grid when electricity demand surges occur, options that AI data center execs oppose. Americans should not endure extreme weather events without electrical power because of AI data centers.
Everyone should contact President Trump and their legislators to address this looming problem now.
